An old town in Gujo County in the mid-west of Gifu Prefecture. The Nagara River flows south through the center of the town, and almost 90% of the town area is covered by forests. The main settlement is Tokunaga, near the confluence of the Nagara River and its tributary, the Kurisu River. Lumber and woodworking are thriving industries here. In the valley of the Kurisu River, there are remains of a garden (a scenic spot) at the site of the castle of the Azuma clan, which existed for 330 years from the 13th century. The Komami River, a tributary of the Nagara River, is a habitat for giant salamanders (a natural monument). In March 2004, the town merged with the towns of Yahata, Shiratori, Takasu, Minami, Myoho, and Wara in Gujo County to form Gujo City. Area: 152.48 km2 . Population: 7,382 (2003).

A former town in Saga County, central Saga Prefecture. It occupies the northern part of the Saga Plain and the southern foot of the Sefuri Mountains. The Nagasaki Expressway runs through the area. It was developed early, and has many remains of the Jomon and Yayoi cultures, and was also the site of the provincial capital and provincial temple of Hizen Province. Rice is grown on the plains, and field crops are cultivated at the foot of the mountains, with mandarin oranges and persimmons also being cultivated. In recent years, it has become increasingly urbanized. The Kawakami Gorge is located upstream of the Kawakami River. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Saga City along with Fuji Town, Morotomi Town, and Mitsuse Village, Kanzaki County. 55.42 km2 . Population: 22,582 (2003).

It is primarily agricultural and forestry-based, with Osakina and watermelons being its specialties. It is served by the Joetsu Line and Joetsu Shinkansen. Urasa, in the center of the town, is known for its ski resort and the Naked Push Festival at Fukoji Bishamon-do Temple. It is the gateway to religious climbing of Mount Hakkai. In November 2004, it merged with Muikamachi in Minamiuonuma County to become a city, Minamiuonuma City. Area: 130.91 km2 . Population: 14,726 (2003).

A former town in Yamato County in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies the southern Chikushi Plain, the Yabe River delta, and the Ariake Sea reclaimed land. It is a highly mechanized rice paddy area, and greenhouse horticulture is also popular. Nori seaweed farming and shellfish processing are carried out along the coast. The Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line runs through it. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Mitsuhashi Town in Yamato County and Yanagawa City. 22.78 km2 . Population 17,463 (2003).

An old town in Kumage County, southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. The land has been open since ancient times, and the Kogoishi stone archaeological site is located on Mt. Iwaki in the southeast. It is a farming village that mainly produces rice, but it borders Hikari City to the east and has many commuters to the Shunan industrial area. It was incorporated into Hikari City in October 2004. 32.09 km2 . Population: 8,310 (2003).

A town in Kurokawa County, central Miyagi Prefecture. The town of Yoshioka, in the center of the prefecture, developed as a post town on the Oshu Kaido road and as a castle town after the castle was built by Date Masamune's third son, Munekiyo. The town is centered on rice farming. Bamboo crafts are a specialty. The Tohoku Expressway runs through the town. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 225.49 km2 . Population: 24,894 (2010).

A former town in Kamo District, central Hiroshima Prefecture. It is located in the lowlands of the Mukunashi River basin in the Kibi Plateau. Rice is the main agricultural crop, and dairy cows and peaches are also cultivated. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Mihara City along with Hongo Town, Toyota District, and Kui Town, Mitsugi District. Area: 121.76 km2 . Population: 7,402 (2003).

新潟県南部,南魚沼郡の旧町。魚野川中流域を占める。農林業が主で,大崎菜,スイカを特産。上越線,上越新幹線が通じる。中心の浦佐はスキー場,普光寺毘沙門堂の裸押し祭で知られる。八海(はっかい)山の信仰登山の玄関口。2004年11月南魚沼郡六日町と合併し市制,南魚沼市となる。130.91km2。1万4726人(2003)。
