Atmospheric re-entry

When a spacecraft or artificial satellite enters a planet's atmosphere from outer space. Dealing with the high heat and extremely large deceleration caused by friction with the air are major issues. Early spacecraft entered the atmosphere on a ballistic trajectory, which caused a large deceleration and made it impossible to change the landing point. However, the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft changed to a method that uses lift, and the Space Shuttle now has full flight capabilities. On the other hand, methods of protecting the hull and aircraft from high heat include evaporating the surface of the aircraft and cooling it with latent heat, and using insulating materials.

宇宙船や人工衛星が宇宙空間から惑星の大気圏に突入すること。空気との摩擦による高熱と非常に大きな減速度への対応が重要な課題になる。初期の宇宙船は突入の経路を弾道軌道としており，減速度が大きくまた着地点の変更も不可能だったが，ジェミニ宇宙船やアポロ宇宙船は揚力を利用する方式に変わり，さらにスペースシャトルでは完全な飛行能力をもつに至っている。一方高熱から船体や機体を守るには，機体表面を気化させて潜熱で冷却する方法，断熱材を用いる方法が採用されている。
