A colloquial name for epidemic parotitis. An acute infectious disease caused by the mumps virus. The most common age group is 4 to 14 years old, and it is uncommon in infants and young children. Most cases are transmitted by droplet infection, and symptoms include high fever and painful swelling of the parotid gland. Unless there are complications such as meningitis or encephalitis, the disease usually resolves within about a week. In adults, orchitis and oophoritis may occur, resulting in infertility. Treatment is symptomatic, such as cooling the head for high fever and applying a cold compress for swelling of the parotid gland. The disease has strong immunity and provides lifelong immunity. Prevention is possible with a live attenuated vaccine.

流行性耳下腺炎の俗称。ムンプスウイルスによる急性伝染性疾患。好発年齢は４〜14歳で，乳幼児には少ない。ほとんどは飛沫(ひまつ)感染で，症状は高熱と痛みを伴う耳下腺のはれ。髄膜炎，脳炎等の合併症のない限り，普通１週間程度でなおる。成人では睾丸(こうがん)炎，卵巣炎を併発して不妊となることがある。療法は高熱に対しては頭部を冷やし，耳下腺のはれに対しては冷湿布するなど対症的。免疫性が強く，終生免疫を得る。弱毒性の生ワクチンによる予防が可能である。
