Pinsk (English spelling)
A city in the Brest Oblast in southwestern Belarus. A river port city at the confluence of the Pina and Pripyat rivers, about 160 km east of the oblast capital Brest. An ancient city that first appeared in records in 1097, it prospered through trade on the Pripyat River. From the 13th to the 16th century it was part of Lithuania, from 1569 to 1793 it was part of Poland, and later it was part of Russia. Between World War I and World War II it became part of Poland again. Industries include shipbuilding, ship repair, plywood, furniture, artificial leather, beer, hosiery, and flax processing. A railway line runs between Brest and Gomel. Population: 123,800 (1991 estimate).
