A song or instrumental piece that symbolizes a nation. As the concept of a modern "nation" was formed and construction progressed, measures to promote a sense of belonging and patriotism to the nation were necessary, and along with mottos (slogans), flags, emblems, flowers, and birds, songs were either officially established or unofficially circulated among the people as a matter of custom. The content and nature of national anthems reflect the changes in the state system. In monarchies, the anthem praises the monarch and his reign, while in republics, it sings of the unity and freedom of the people. It is self-evident that the language used is often the native language of the country, but in reality, multilingual countries and former colonies have the difficulty of satisfying all of their citizens. For example, Switzerland has lyrics in five languages ​​to the same melody, and Papua New Guinea, a newly emerging country with over 700 language groups, uses English, the official language. Some national anthems do not have (officially approved) lyrics, such as the national anthems of Spain, Morocco, Guinea, and Kuwait.

Musically, even when based on local folk songs, most of the melodies are based on Western temperament, which is related to the fact that the formation of modern nation states itself originated in Western Europe. The melodies can be classified into stately hymns, light marches, loud fanfares, and those borrowed from folk materials.

National anthems are sung or performed in international settings or in places where a large number of people gather within a country, as a symbol of national prestige and ethnic identity. For example, these include events attended by the head of state, sporting events such as the Olympics, and specific times in theaters and broadcasts. In such settings, participants are asked to perform ceremonial gestures such as standing and removing their hats.

Japan's national anthem, Kimigayo, has been debated for not being in keeping with the spirit of the new constitution that was enacted after the Second World War. There is currently no alternative song, and the debate has intensified since the enactment of the Law Concerning the National Flag and Anthem (Law No. 127 of 1999). Traditionally, the anthem has more often been performed with instrumental accompaniment than with participants singing the lyrics in unison, and this trend is unlikely to change easily.

国家を象徴する歌曲または器楽曲。近代的な「国家」の概念が形成され建設が進むにつれて、国家に対する帰属心や愛国心を助長する方策が必要となり、モットー（スローガン）、旗、紋章、花、鳥などと並んで、歌が公式に制定されたり、非公式ではあっても慣例的に人民の間に広まったりしてきた。国歌の内容や性格は、国家体制の変遷を反映している。すなわち、王制国家の場合には君主とその治世をたたえ、共和制国家では人民の団結や自由を歌い上げる。使用言語は、当該母国語の場合が多いのは自明の理であるが、現実には多言語国家や旧植民地国家においては国民全員を満足させることができない悩みがみてとれる。たとえば、スイスでは同一旋律に五つの言語による歌詞が施されているし、700余りの言語集団を有する新興国パプア・ニューギニアでは公用語の英語によっている。また、スペイン、モロッコ、ギニア、クウェートなどの国歌のように、（公認された）歌詞をもたないものもある。

　音楽的には、土地の民謡に基づいている場合ですら、西洋的平均律にあわせた旋律を使っているのがほとんどである。これは、近代的国家形成そのものが西ヨーロッパに端を発していることにも関係している。曲調としては、威厳に満ちた賛歌風のもの、軽やかな行進曲風のもの、高らかに鳴り響くファンファーレ風のもの、民俗素材からの借用によるものなどに分類できる。

　国歌は、国威を示したり、民族的アイデンティティを象徴するものとして、国際的な雰囲気の場や、一国内でも多数の国民が集合する場などで歌われ演奏される。たとえば、元首が臨席する行事、オリンピックなどのスポーツ大会、劇場や放送の特定時間などである。そして、そのような場では、起立、脱帽などの儀礼的所作が参会者に要請される。

　日本の国歌『君が代』は、第二次世界大戦後の新憲法の精神に即していないという理由で論議されてきた。現在これにかわる歌はなく、1999年（平成11）に「国旗及び国歌に関する法律」（国旗・国歌法、平成11年法律第127号）が制定されると、論議はますます盛んになった。従来、歌詞を参会者が斉唱するよりも器楽演奏されることが多かったが、この傾向は簡単には変わらないだろう。
