1821‐91 A physician and writer from Odessa in southern Russia, he was a pioneer of the Zionist movement. Initially, he was a leading advocate of the active assimilation of Jews into Russian society, but in despair after the pogroms of 1881, he anonymously published "Self-Liberation" the following year in 1882. He argued that anti-Semitism would not disappear with the overcoming of prejudice through enlightenment and education, but could only be eradicated when the Jews gained their own territory and homeland and ceased to be a shadowy, phantom presence, and this had a shocking effect on the Jews of Eastern Europe.
