The area includes the coastline from Port Hedland to Dampier, the De Grey River, the Ashburton River, and the Hamersley Ranges in the northwest of Western Australia, Australia. It is an arid region with little and unstable rainfall, and is far from the core of the state, so it is not suitable for extensive sheep farming or agriculture. However, there was a gold rush for several years from 1888, and mineral resources were extracted. Especially since the 1960s, large-scale iron ore development led to the construction of mining towns such as Newman, Goldsworthy, Tom Price, and Panawonica (1972), ports such as Dampier, Port Hedland, and Cape Lambert (1972), and four railways. Iron ore is exported to Japan and other countries. In the 1970s, large-scale natural gas deposits were discovered offshore, and industrial development is planned. Population 48,620 (1991 estimate).

オーストラリア，ウェスタンオーストラリア州北西部，ポートヘドランドからダンピアにかけての海岸線と，ドゥグレイ川，アシュバートン川の間，ハマーズリー山脈を含む地方。乾燥地帯で降水量は少く不安定で，州の核心部からも遠いため，粗放な牧羊のほか農牧業には適さない。しかし 1888年から数年間のゴールドラッシュをはじめ鉱産資源の採掘がみられ，特に 1960年代以降の大規模な鉄鉱石開発によりニューマン，ゴールズワージー，トムプライス，パナウォニカ (1972) などの鉱山町やダンピア，ポートヘドランド，ケープランバート (72) などの港が建設され，4本の鉄道が建設された。日本などへ鉄鉱石を輸出。 70年代に入り沖合いに大規模な天然ガスの埋蔵が発見され，工業開発が計画されている。人口4万 8620 (1991推計) 。
