Sergiu Celibidache

Sergiu Celibidache

German conductor. Born in Roman, Romania, he studied at the Berlin University of Music and the University of Berlin. In 1945, he successfully conducted the Berlin Philharmonic as a substitute, and served as its chief conductor from 1945 to 1952, working hard to rebuild the orchestra after World War II. However, he left when Karajan was invited to become its permanent conductor, and worked as a guest conductor in Europe and Latin America. From 1963 onwards, he served as chief conductor and music director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, SDR Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, and others. In 1977 (Showa 52), he came to Japan for the first time as a guest conductor with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. He showed a unique talent for making the orchestra sound beautiful and clear, but he was resented for his slow tempo and excessive expression, which made him seem to have an old-fashioned style.
