An old town in the center of the Izu Peninsula, Tagata District, Shizuoka Prefecture. The settlement lies along the Omi River, a tributary of the Kano River, and in the south lies the Amagi Mountains, with Mt. Manzaburo as its highest peak. Wasabi and shiitake mushrooms are local specialties, and the town also operates as a forestry industry. The Izu Skyline runs through the town. In April 2004, it merged with Shuzenji Town, Toi Town, and Amagi-Yugashima Town in Tagata District to form Izu City. Area: 110.02 km2 . Population: 8,278 (2003). 静岡県田方(たがた)郡,伊豆半島中部の旧町。狩野(かの)川の支流大見川沿いに集落があり,南部には万三郎岳を主峰とする天城連山がそびえる。ワサビ,シイタケを特産し,林業も営む。伊豆スカイラインが通じる。2004年4月田方郡修善寺町,土肥町,天城湯ヶ島町と合併し,伊豆市となる。110.02km2。8278人(2003)。
