Fire walking - Hiwatari

Japanese:
Fire walking - Hiwatari

This is a ritual in which Shugendo and Ontake monks walk over burning charcoal or fire as a form of divine power. In Shugendo, this is called Kasho Sammaiyaho, and it is believed that the fire burns away the impurities and sins of the world, and at the same time, they become one with the flame-wrapped Acala, whom they worship. Even today, some mountain religious temples and shrines perform this ritual during festivals, but in the early modern period, it was popular for the purpose of showing off divine power to believers and the general public. In many cases, believers who wish for worldly benefits are made to walk over the fire after the Shugendo ritual. Fire-walking rituals are widely seen among shamans around the world, and are said to be an expression of attaining a state in which they have acquired the power of combustion and can exert spiritual power.
