The central square of Venice, Italy. It has marked the history of Venice as the stage for municipal government and festival events. It is now world-famous as the city's number one tourist attraction. It is divided into two L-shaped parts, Piazza (meaning square, 170m x 70m) and Piazzetta (meaning small square, 83m x 47m). St. Mark's Basilica is located on the eastern side of the former, and Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) is located on the eastern side of the latter, which opens to the sea through two large columns carrying a winged lion statue and a statue of Theodore. The history of the square dates back to the 9th century, when the original Palazzo Ducale and the cathedral were built, but it took on its current form in the mid-12th century, when the canal was filled in and the area was expanded and developed.

イタリアのベネチアの中心広場。市政と祝祭行事の舞台としてベネチアの歴史を刻む。現在は同市第一の観光名所として世界的に有名。ピアッツァ(広場の意。170m×70m)とピアッツェッタ(小広場の意。83m×47m)の，L字形に連なる2部分に分かれ，前者の東辺にサン･マルコ大聖堂が，有翼ライオン像とテオドルス像を載せる2本の大円柱を介して海に開く後者の東辺にパラッツォ･ドゥカーレ(総督宮)が位置する。広場の歴史は最初期のパラッツォ･ドゥカーレと聖堂が創建された9世紀にさかのぼるが，現状に近い形をとったのは運河を埋め立てて拡張，整備が行われた12世紀中ごろである。
