A general term for insects in the Hemiptera order, family Fulgoridae. They are mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions, and over 500 species are known from around the world. Many species are large, with some species such as the South American Laternaria having a wingspan of up to 15cm. Many species have beautiful colors and patterns on their wings. Some species have a strange shape with a head that protrudes greatly forward, and are known in English as lantern flies. This protrusion has been thought to be luminous, but in fact this is not the case. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
