Sports for people with physical and mental disabilities. Today, sports for the disabled are carried out at three levels, each with different goals and challenges. First, sports are carried out as a means of treatment and are established as a legally recognized form of treatment. Second, sports are offered to many disabled people as general sports or leisure sports. Third, sports for the disabled are held as competitive sports, such as in the Paralympics. Sports for the disabled originally began in Europe as sports for disabled soldiers in World War I, to give soldiers injured in field hospitals the opportunity to improve their physical and mental health by practicing sports.
