1865‐1952 Italian mathematician. He graduated from the University of Padua in 1886, spent a year at the University of Rome, then moved to the University of Turin, and finally to the University of Rome in 1891. He was later elected president of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, a position he held for the rest of his life. His most important mathematical achievements were in algebraic geometry, and together with his senior Luigi Cremona (1830-1903), his contemporary Corrado Segre (1863-1924), F. Henriques, and his junior F. Severi, he developed a profound theory of algebraic geometry centered on surface theory, and the group of algebraic geometers around them is called the Italian School.
