A former town in Satsuma County, central Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies the Hiwaki River basin, a tributary of the Sendai River, and most of the area is forest. In addition to rice cultivation, the town produces tea, tobacco, and horticultural crops, and also engages in livestock and sericulture. Ichibino Onsen is home to the town. In October 2004, Kawauchi City merged with Iriki Town, Togo Town, Kedoin Town, Sato Village, Kamikoshiki Village, Shimokoshiki Village, and Kashima Village in Satsuma County to become Satsuma Kawauchi City.
