[Development History]
The world's first successful coal mining machine, used in a British coal mine in 1861, was called the Iron Man, and it imitated the action of a human swinging a pickaxe horizontally to create a horizontal groove at the bottom of the coal seam (undercutting). Inspired by the success of the Iron Man, by the end of the 19th century, a series of machines were invented, including the chain cutter (also called a jib cutter or coal cutter), which was used for many years afterwards, the disc cutter, which had blades attached to a circular plate that rotates in a horizontal plane, and the bar cutter, which had many blades attached to a round bar with a horizontal shaft. All of these were used for undercutting coal seams.
