Japan Book Code - Nihon Toshokodo (English) Japan Book Code

Japanese: 日本図書コード - にほんとしょこーど(英語表記)Japan Book Code
Japan Book Code - Nihon Toshokodo (English) Japan Book Code
An identification code unique to Japan that is assigned to books published domestically. It takes the form of the International Standard Book Number, followed by a classification code (4 digits) beginning with "C", a price code (5 digits) beginning with "¥", and finally an "E". The classification code consists of a sales object code, a publication format code distinguishing between hardcover, paperback, and pocket book, and a content code indicating the subject classification. Japan introduced its own book code in 1970 (Showa 45), and introduced the International Standard Book Number in 1981 (Showa 56) in response to internationalization. At that time, a system was created that inherited the classification code and added a price code. In 1990 (Heisei 2), the book JAN code, displayed as a two-line barcode, was also introduced.
