Japanese: ビワガニ(琵琶蟹) - ビワガニ（英語表記）Lyreidus tridentatus

A decapod crustacean of the family Ranidae (illustration). This is one of the crabs with the most unique shape. It is an elongated crab with a carapace length of 5 cm and width of 2.5 cm, and is oval-shaped with a narrow front, reminiscent of the ancient Japanese stringed instrument, the biwa, hence its name. The carapace is shiny and strongly curved from side to side. The forehead is a small triangle, with small eye stalks that move back and forth on either side. There is a small spine in the center of the side edge of the carapace. The phalanges of the first two pairs of walking legs are sharp, but the third pair is broad and plate-like.

十脚目アサヒガニ科の甲殻類(イラスト)。カニ類中でもっとも特異な形態といわれるものの1種。甲長5cm，甲幅2.5cmほどの縦長のカニで，前方が狭い楕円形であるため，日本古来の弦楽器である琵琶を思い起こさせるのでこの名がある。甲面は光沢があり，左右に強く湾曲している。額は小さな三角形で，その左右に前後に出し入れする小さな眼柄（がんぺい）が位置する。甲の側縁中央部に1本の小さなとげがある。前2対の歩脚の指節はとがっているが，第3対目は幅広い板状である。
