A gastropod snail of the family Acanthidae in the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. It is a large species found from the east coast of Australia through the Arafura Sea on the north coast to parts of Indonesia, living on muddy bottoms at depths of 20 to 50 meters. It is the largest snail in the world, with a shell height of 70 centimeters and a shell diameter of 35 centimeters. The shell is thick and yellow-orange, spindle-shaped, with ridges at the shoulders and bottom edges, and is almost flat between them. The shell surface is covered with a velvety yellow-brown shell, with a wide opening and long water channel. The lid is horny and leaf-shaped. The shell surface is polished and carved to make ornaments. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it was brought back by a pearl oyster (Shirochogai) harvesting ship from the Arafura Sea after World War II.
