[1] [Noun] ① A clan with the surname Minamoto . After Emperor Saga demoted his princes to commoner status in 814, this became the most common surname bestowed on princes. There were the Seiwa Genji, Murakami Genji, Uda Genji , and Kazan Genji, but the Seiwa Genji and Murakami Genji were particularly prosperous for a long time. The Seiwa Genji later gained influence in the eastern provinces and developed as the head of the samurai family.
