Also known as "Kanpekidan," this novel dates back to the late early modern period. Written by Ueda Akinari, it is in two volumes and was written around 1791 (Kansei 3) and published posthumously in 1822 (Bunsei 5). It is a humorous novel written in the form of a parody of The Tales of Ise, and consists of 24 short stories, with humorous notes by the author himself. Social customs and the lives of people such as doctors and scholars are satirized with a light, bitter humor that is often found in classic stories, and the work concludes with the author's own criticism. Specific examples of people who served as models for the stories are also given. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
