An insect of the Hemiptera family, Pycnonotidae (illustration). It is an aquatic insect resembling a praying mantis, with a tooth-like projection on the long front femur, and when the tibiae are folded, the tips of the projections engage with the teeth. The captured prey is far from the proboscis, but thanks to the extremely long proximal segment, it can bring the prey closer to its mouth by simply bending the joints like a pantograph. In Europe and the United States, this insect is called the water scorpion, as its capturing legs resemble the pincers of a scorpion. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
