A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family, family Pycnonotidae. A type of horsefly with a significantly bulging thorax compared to its small head. Body length is about 7-10 mm. The head is lower than the thorax, and is mostly occupied by compound eyes. The thorax is large and spherical. The abdomen is thick, spindle-shaped or spherical. The legs are thin, with paired palps at the ends of the segments, and another palp in the center. Adults gather on flowers to suck nectar. The larvae have suckers and long bristles at the tail end, and parasitize spiders and their egg capsules, feeding on them. They are common in temperate zones, and several species are found in Japan. The Oligoneura nigroaenea is 6-8 mm long, indigo-black with a brassy sheen, and is found in Hokkaido and Honshu.
