American film director. Born in Vienna, he moved to the United States with his parents as a boy. After trying various jobs, he entered the film industry, and after working as an editor, scriptwriter, and assistant director, he directed "The Man Who Saw It" (self-financed production) in 1925, which attracted attention. He established his position with "The Gangster Movie" (1927), which elevated gangster movies to a genre of its own, and thereafter released a succession of outstanding works. His representative works are "On the Waterfront" (1928), "A Woman's Life" (1929), and after the talkies, "The Blue Angel" (1930), which he made in Germany, and a series of films in which Dietrich, who starred in this film, was cast as the heroine, such as "Morocco" (1930), "The Spy" (1931), and "Shanghai Express" (1932). These were characterized by a unique and beautiful visual style that effectively used light and shadow, but his career stagnated after the late 1930s. After World War II, he made Anatahan (1953) in Japan.

アメリカの映画監督。ウィーンに生まれ、少年時代に両親とともにアメリカに渡る。さまざまな職業を経験したのち映画界に入り、編集、脚本、助監督を経て、1925年『救ひを求める人々』（自費製作）を監督、注目を集めた。ギャング映画を一つのジャンルに高めた『暗黒街』（1927）でその地位を確立し、以後、秀作を立て続けに発表した。代表作は『紐育(ニューヨーク)の波止場』（1928）、『女の一生』（1929）、トーキー以後は、ドイツでつくった『嘆きの天使』（1930）、そしてこの映画に出演したディートリヒをヒロインにする一連の映画『モロッコ』（1930）、『間諜(かんちょう)X27』（1931）、『上海(シャンハイ)特急』（1932）などである。これらは光と影を効果的に用いた独特の美しい映像スタイルによって特徴づけられていたが、1930年代後半以降は沈滞した。第二次世界大戦後、日本で『アナタハン』（1953）を製作。
