Hillbilly - Hillbilly (English spelling)

Hillbilly - Hillbilly (English spelling)

A type of American country music. People from the Appalachian Mountains in the central and southern United States were called hillbillies, meaning "mountain people" or "people from the mountain region," so the term referred to songs that originated among farmers and lumberjacks in the region, or to their strong accented singing style, but there was a time when the mountain music that developed in this region was also called hillbilly. Popular songs that developed mainly around the country and western show "Grand Ole Opry," which was started by a radio station in Nashville, Tennessee in 1925, came to be called hillbilly, and since the 1940s it has been used in contrast to mountain, and the term country has now become common.
