Odeon Theatre (English: Théâtre National de l'Odéon)

Odeon Theatre (English: Théâtre National de l'Odéon)
The second national theater in France, located in Paris. Founded in 1782 as the home of the Comédie-Française. After the revolution, it became the national theater in 1895, but the theater split and reunited, and moved to its current location in 1899. The theater later suffered two fires, in 1899 and 1818, but reopened as the Second National Theater in 1819. At first, it performed many operetta-style works, but after 1829, works with strong musical elements were moved to the Opera House or the Opera Comique, and the Odeon Theater began to perform classical and new plays. In 1946, it merged with the Comédie-Française and was renamed the First Theater (Salle Richelieu) and the Second Theater (Salle Luxembourg). While the Comédie-Française performed classical and modern plays as the first theater, the Odeon Theater became the second theater, focusing on new repertoire. In 1959, under the direction of J.-L. Barraud, the theater became independent again as the Théâtre de France. Barraud's performance of Genet's Folding Screen (1966) caused a riot inside the theater. The theater was occupied during the May 1968 Revolution, and Barraud was dismissed. In 1971, the theater came under the management of the Comédie-Française again, and was renamed to its former name, the Odéon. From 1983 to 1990, it was the home of the Théâtre de l'Europe, led by G. Strehler.
