Born: 1739, Madrid Died in 1811. Madrid. A representative architect of Spanish neoclassicism. Born the son of a sculptor, he studied at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, and received a scholarship to study in Rome from 1758 to 1765. After returning to Spain, he criticized Churriguera's style, and after designing villas related to the royal family in Palladian style, he gradually turned to neoclassicism, and as the court architect (1789-1808, chief court architect), he designed many buildings, mainly in Madrid. His main work is the current Prado Museum (1785-1887, remodeled in the 19th century), which he conceived as a natural history museum, and which shows an expression similar to 18th century Italian neoclassicism.
