Tiger Hill

Japanese: 虎丘 - こきゅう

A small hill about 36m above sea level, located northwest of the city of Suzhou in the southeastern part of Jiangsu Province, China. In the 5th century BC, at the end of the Spring and Autumn period, King Fuchai of Wu buried his father Helü here . There is a legend that a white tiger appeared and guarded the tomb three days after Helü's burial, which is the origin of the name Tiger Hill. Fuchai is said to have buried 3,000 swords for his father, who loved swords, and there is a Sword Pond, which is said to be the site where the First Emperor of Qin and Sun Quan of the Three Kingdoms period dug in search of those swords. There is also the Thousand-Man Rock, which is said to have been stained red with fresh blood when 1,000 craftsmen who were involved in the construction of this tomb were massacred, and continues to turn red every time it rains for a long time. ◇It is also called "Umiyukusan."

中国の江蘇(こうそ)省東南部、蘇州(そしゅう)（スーチョウ）市の城外、西北方向にある、標高36mほどの小高い丘。春秋時代末期の紀元前5世紀に呉王夫差(ふさ)が父の闔閭(こうりょ)を葬った陵墓がある。闔閭を葬った3日後に白虎が現れて墓を守ったという言い伝えがあり、これが虎丘(とらおか)という名称の由来になっている。夫差は剣を愛した父のために、3000本の剣を埋めたと伝えられ、のちに秦の始皇帝や三国時代の孫権がその剣を探して掘った跡だといわれる剣池がある。また、この墳墓の造営に携わった1000人の工匠(こうしょう)を殺戮(さつりく)したときに鮮血に染まった岩が、のちのちまで雨が降るたびに赤く染まったという伝説を持つ千人岩などがある。◇「海湧山」ともいう。
