Shoulder - Shoulder

A general term for cloth, knitted fabrics, and fur products that women wear around their shoulders to protect them from the cold when they go out. They are also called shawls or stoles. They come in a variety of shapes, including rectangular, square, and triangular, and come in a variety of sizes. They are also made of a wide variety of materials and weaves, including velvet, chiffon, silk, wool, and cotton. Cashmere shawls, made from cashmere wool in the Kashmir region of India, are particularly expensive and are popular as luxury items. With the development of synthetic fibers, many products made from these materials have also come into use. Shoulder shawls were developed in Europe and were used as a secondary decoration for clothing and to protect against the cold. In Japan, they were used by some people, mainly in Tokyo, along with Western clothing around 1877 (Meiji 10), and began to be used with Japanese clothing from around the mid-Meiji period, and continue to be used to this day.

女子が外出のとき、寒さを防ぐために肩に掛ける布、編物、毛皮製品の総称。ショール、ストールともいう。形は長方形、正方形、三角形などがあり、大きさはさまざまである。ビロード、シフォン・ベルベット、絹、毛、綿など、織り方、材質も多岐にわたっている。とくにインド・カシミール地方のカシミヤの毛で織られたカシミヤ・ショールは高価なもので、高級品として好まれる。化学繊維の発達とともに、これらを素材にしたものも多く用いられている。肩掛けはヨーロッパで発達したもので、衣服の装飾用としての補助的役目と防寒の目的に用いられていた。日本では1877年（明治10）ごろ洋服とともに東京を中心に一部の人たちに使用され、明治中期ごろから和服にも用いられるようになって今日に至っている。
