Noh and Kyogen
〘Noun〙① Noh and Kyogen. ※Warambegusa (1660) 1 "The Noh and Kyogen troupe look at the roles, first understand our roles well, and investigate the appropriate props."② Kyogen in Noh. It is used to distinguish it from Kabuki Kyogen. The word began to be used in the Edo period. It is also simply Kyogen. ※Meiji Social Hyakuwa (1936)〈Yamamoto Shogetsu〉The people who made fun of it were all impressed "Yamamoto Azuma (the previous Tojiro), a Noh and Kyogen performer who was said to be the greatest of all time, was the head of the Okura school and an outstanding master."③ It is a form of Kyogen that has been broken down into a hastily performed style. It was performed in a small theater in the grounds of a temple or shrine. ※Humorous story: Tokaido Chu Hizakurige (1802-09), volume 7: “The medicine peddler’s tales, the impersonations of the yakuza, and Noh and Kyogen performances filled the temple grounds to the brim.”

〘名〙① 能と狂言。※わらんべ草(1660)一「能狂言組出、役付を見て、先我々の役々よく合点して、いるべき道具をせんさくし」② 能楽における狂言。歌舞伎狂言などと区別するためにいう。江戸時代になって使われ出したことば。単に狂言とも。※明治世相百話(1936)〈山本笑月〉バカにした連中総感服「古今の絶技といはれた能狂言の山本東(先代東次郎)は大蔵流の家元で、全く飛び抜けた名人」③ 本来の狂言をくずして俄(にわか)風にしたもの。寺社の境内などの小屋掛けで演じられた。※滑稽本・東海道中膝栗毛(1802‐09)七「売薬のいひたて、うき世ものまね、能狂言(ノウケウゲン)、境内に所せきまでみちみちたり」
