Eastern Song

Japanese: 東国正韻 - とうごくせいいん

The first surviving rhyming book in Korea. A 6-volume printed book edited mainly by Shin Suk-ju of the Yi Dynasty. Completed in 1447 (the 29th year of King Sejong's reign) and published the following year. It is classified into 4 tones, 23 mu, and 91 rhymes. In an attempt to organize the sounds of Korean Chinese characters, an explanation (Hangul translation) of the Yuan Dynasty's Gokin Yun Hoe Jyo Yao (1297) was attempted, but this did not work out, so it was decided to use this as a basis to create a rhyming book unique to Korean phonetics. The volumes are not divided into four tones as in China, but instead similar rhymes are grouped together and then divided into four tones. The phonetics are shown in early Hangul characters.

朝鮮に現存する最初の韻書。李朝の申叔舟らが中心になり編集した活字本6巻。1447年(世宗29)成立，翌年刊行。4声･23母･91韻に分類している。朝鮮漢字音を整理すべく元の《古今韻会挙要》(1297)の諺解(ハングル訳)を図ったがうまくゆかず，これを土台に朝鮮字音独自の韻書を作ることになり成立。巻分けは中国のごとく四声の別をもってせず，同種の韻を一括し，その中を4声に分けている。字音は初期のハングル字体で示されている。
