A city in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1911. The Tenryu River and Lake Hamana are its east-west borders, and it occupies most of the Mikatahara Plateau and the coastal plain overlooking the Enshu Nada Sea. The city center developed as a post town on the Tokaido and as a castle town for Hamamatsu Castle, and became the prefecture's largest commercial and industrial city. It is connected to the Tokaido Main Line, Shinkansen, Iida Line, Tenryu Hamanako Railway, and Tomei Expressway, and is the starting point of the Enshu Railway. Following a merger, the city area is the second largest in Japan after Takayama City. It was once a major producer of cotton textiles, but since the mid-Meiji period it has been known for the manufacture of musical instruments such as pianos, and in addition to the manufacture of automobile and motorcycle parts, it was designated as the mother city of the Hamamatsu Regional Technopolis in 1992. General machinery, metal products, and electrical equipment industries have developed, and the city's manufacturing shipment value for manufactured goods reached 2.5168 trillion yen (2003), ranking first in the prefecture. Rural areas produce mandarin oranges, watermelons, cucumbers, melons, etc., but part-time work is common. Most of the northern part is mountain forest, where forestry is practiced. The city is home to the Shijimizuka shell mound from the Jomon period, the Iba ruins from the Yayoi to Heian periods, Kanzanji, and the Hamamatsu Air Base of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The kite-flying festival in May is famous. In July 2005, Tenryu City, Hamakita City, Haruno Town in Shuchi County, Sakuma Town, Misakubo Town, and Tatsuyama Village in Iwata County, Maisaka Town, Yutome Town in Hamana County, Hosoe Town, Inasa Town, and Mikkabi Town in Inasa County were incorporated.
