A small annual weed of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows in moist fields and roadsides. The stems and leaves are soft and slightly fleshy. The plant is entirely glabrous. The stems are erect or branch at the base and grow obliquely upward, 5-20 cm tall. The leaves are opposite, elliptical, stalkless, rounded at the tip, and not sawtoothed. They are 15-25 mm long, 6-10 mm wide, and have 3-5 palmate veins. From summer to autumn, one flower appears on each side of the leaf at the top of the stem. The flowers are labiate, reddish purple, and 5 mm long. There are four stamens, and the two lower filaments have club-shaped projections at the base. When an insect touches these, the anthers move and scatter the pollen. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
