Japanese: ヒヨケムシ(避日虫) - ヒヨケムシ（英語表記）sun spider

A general term for arthropods belonging to the order Solpugida of the class Arachnida. They mainly live in tropical and subtropical regions, and are not found in Japan. Approximately 700 species are known, and most of them are nocturnal, hence the name Solpugida, but some species wander around in the sun during the day. They are large arachnids with a body length of 1 to 7 cm, with extremely large chelicerae, and the anterior dorsal plate that supports them is also strongly raised and large. Their palps are the same size as their walking legs or longer, with rounded tips that protrude forward when walking, and they feel around.

蛛形（ちゆけい）綱ヒヨケムシ目Solpugidaに属する節足動物の総称。生息地はおもに熱帯･亜熱帯地域で，日本にはいない。約700種が知られており，その多くが夜行性のためヒヨケムシの名があるが，なかには昼間ひなたを徘徊する種類もいる。体長1～7cmの大型の蛛形類で，鋏角（きようかく）がすこぶる大きく，またそれを支えている前背板も強く隆起して大きい。触肢は歩脚と同大あるいはそれよりも長大で，先端は丸くなり歩行時には前方に突き出してさぐり歩く。
