This marine fish belongs to the order Notacanthus of the class Osteichthyes and the family Notacanthuidae. It is found in the North Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea, and off the coast of New Zealand. Its body is long and slender, especially its tail. Its snout protrudes, and its mouth is small and opens ventrally. Its dorsal fin has 32-35 spines spaced apart, but no soft rays. Its anal fin is well developed with a long base. It lacks a caudal fin. Its body is dark brown, and its pectoral fins are black. It passes through a leptocephalus-type larval stage. It grows to a total length of just over 50 centimeters. It lives in the deep sea, at depths of 700-3700 meters, and is occasionally caught with bottom trawls. In addition to this species, Japan also has the black notacanthus and the fox notacanthus , but these have fewer spines on their dorsal fins, less than 13. The bladderwort is placed in a separate family, the Brachyurus gracilis, because its dorsal fin is made up of spines and soft rays.
