A German literary publisher founded in Leipzig in 1902. During the time of the East-West division, it was split between Frankfurt in West Germany and Leipzig in East Germany, but its current headquarters are in Frankfurt. It was founded in 1899 as a literary magazine called Die Insel, published by OJ Bierbaum and others, and developed under Anton Kippenberg (1874-1950). Since its founding, it has consistently focused on literary books, and is well-known for its classics, especially those by Goethe and Rilke. 1902年ライプチヒに設立されたドイツの文芸出版社。東西分裂の時代は西ドイツのフランクフルトと東ドイツのライプチヒに分かれていたが,現本社はフランクフルト。1899年O.J.ビーアバウムらが発刊した文芸誌《ディー・インゼル》が母体となって生まれ,キッペンベルクAnton Kippenberg(1874‐1950)のもとで発展。設立当初より一貫して文芸書を中心にしており,古典もの,とくにゲーテとリルケでは定評がある。
