Kagura music - Kagura bayashi

Japanese:
Kagura music - Kagura bayashi

[Folk performing arts]
In the narrow sense, hayashi refers to musical performance mainly using instruments, but in folk performing arts, there are examples where chanting while beating drums at ritual sites to pray for the arrival of the gods and to celebrate the prosperity of the land and people is called shikibayashi or uchihayashi (see the Flower Festival in Kitashitara County, Aichi Prefecture). It is believed that there was a magical intention to use the power of words and instruments to activate the divine spirits and strengthen and extend the life force of things. It seems to be related to the words "hayasu" (to grow) and "fuyasu" (to multiply), but in festivals around the country, it developed as music to accompany the welcoming of the gods and the acts of divine possession at festival sites, and as music for the procession of the divine spirits. In the former, it became various kagura music such as Torimonokagura, Yutatekagura, and Shishikagura, while in the latter, it evolved into road music such as Matsubayashi and Sagimai, in which groups of people in beautiful costumes parade down the road to lively music, and yatai-bayashi such as Gionbayashi, in which floats and floats are paraded down the road with musical instruments played on them. Other examples include dance music played for singing and dancing at festival sites and Bon dances, and hayashida, which is used to accompany the work of rice planting with flutes and drums.
