A facility that exhibits live insects, also known as an insectarium, was first established at London Zoo in 1881, 53 years after the zoo opened. It is believed that when the zoo had established a collection of mammals and birds and began to focus on exhibiting small animals such as amphibians, there was a growing trend to raise and exhibit a wide variety of insects in the same way, and that another reason for this was the need to raise insects (such as grasshoppers) as food for birds. This style of exhibit, in which terrestrial tanks are lined up in a building similar in structure to an aquarium and rare insects collected from around the world are displayed, was established one after another in major European zoos.

生きた昆虫を展示する施設で，昆虫館とも呼ばれる。最初に設けられたのはロンドン動物園であるが，それは同園が開設されてから53年後の1881年であった。哺乳類や鳥類のコレクションがととのい，両生類などの小動物の展示に力を入れはじめたころ，多様な昆虫類を同様に飼育し展示しようという気運が高まったことと，鳥などの餌として昆虫(バッタなど)飼育の必要性に迫られたことも，その原因と考えられる。水族館に似た構造の建物に陸槽を並べ世界各地から採集した珍しい昆虫を展示する形式はヨーロッパの主な動物園に次々にできた。
