Large-leaved Fern - Large-leaved Fern
A small evergreen fern of the Polypodiaceae family that grows on tree trunks and rocks in mountainous areas; in Japan, it rarely grows to be over 10 cm in size (illustration). The rhizome is short, ascending, brown, membranous, lanceolate, and bears scales about 2 mm long. The leaves are clumpy, with short petioles covered in reddish-brown pubescence. The leaf blade is linear-lanceolate and deeply pinnately lobed. The veins are simple or have one or two branches on the upper side. The sporangia are elliptical, with one at the base of the pinna, and lack an intumescent membrane. It is distributed from southern Kanto to the west, from the warm-weather zone of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, and is also found in the high mountains of Taiwan.
