An astronomical instrument used to measure the altitude of celestial bodies and determine the position of a ship. It has a structure similar to a sextant, but uses 1/8 (45°) of a circumference instead of 1/6. It was invented by J. Hadley of England and can measure the angular distance between two points on the celestial sphere, but has been superseded by more sophisticated sextants.
