Guangzhou Bay

A bay on the eastern coast of the Leizhou Peninsula, which juts out into the South China Sea at the western tip of Guangdong Province in southern China. It is divided into north and south by Donghai Island, which lies in the middle, with the northern part called Guangzhou Bay and the southern part called Leizhou Bay. As Zhanjiang Port is located at the inner part of the bay, it is now called Zhanjiang Bay. In 1898 it was occupied and colonized by France, and in 1943 it was occupied by Japan, but was returned after World War II. The bay is rich in marine resources, and salt production is thriving on Donghai Island and the coast of the peninsula. In 1984 Zhanjiang was designated an economic and technological development zone, and is rapidly becoming an emerging industrial city with the introduction of foreign capital and technology.

中国南部、広東(カントン)省西端、南シナ海に突出する雷州(らいしゅう／レイチョウ)半島東岸の湾。中央に横たわる東海島により南北に分かれ、北は広州湾、南は雷州湾と称する。湾奥に湛江(たんこう／チャンチヤン)港が設けられているので、現在は湛江湾とよぶ。1898年にフランスに占領され植民地となり、1943年には日本に占領されたが、第二次世界大戦後に返還された。湾内は水産資源が豊かで、東海島および半島部の湾岸では製塩業が盛んである。84年湛江は経済技術開発区に指定され、外国からの資本・技術導入による新興工業都市化が進んでいる。
