Fisheries Agency - Suisancho

It is one of the external bureaus of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, along with the Forestry Agency. The Fisheries Agency is headed by the Director-General of the Fisheries Agency, and is assisted by one Deputy Director-General who organizes the affairs of the agency. Its main duties are to protect and cultivate fishery resources, promote development, and adjust fisheries, promote and improve the production, distribution and consumption of fishery products, and perform other tasks related to the development and improvement of the fisheries industry. It has four internal departments: the Fisheries Policy Department, the Resource Management Department, the Aquaculture Promotion Department, and the Fishing Port and Fishing Ground Development Department. It has the Fisheries Policy Council as a council, and six Fisheries Adjustment Offices as regional branch offices (local offices). It had fisheries research institutes (including aquaculture research institutes and fisheries engineering research institutes) as facilities and organizations, but with the reorganization of the central government ministries and agencies in 2001, the Fisheries Research Agency was established as an independent administrative institution, and this center supervises all fisheries research institutes nationwide as its headquarters, and each fisheries research institute also became an independent administrative institution. Other independent administrative institutions under the jurisdiction of the Fisheries Agency were the National Fisheries University and the Salmon and Trout Resources Management Center, but the former was merged with the Fisheries Research Agency to become the Fisheries Research and Education Agency in 2016, and the latter was merged with the Fisheries Research Agency to become the Salmon and Trout Center in 2006, and was merged with the Fisheries Research Agency's Hokkaido Fisheries Research Institute in 2011. In 2016, it became one of the organizations of the Fisheries Research and Education Agency, just like the former.

林野庁と並ぶ農林水産省の外局の一つ。長は水産庁長官であり、1名の次長がこれを助け庁務を整理する。主たる任務は、水産資源の保護培養および開発促進、漁業調整、水産物の生産・流通および消費の増進・改善および調整、その他水産業の発達改善に関する事務を行うことである。内部部局として、漁政部、資源管理部、増殖推進部、漁港漁場整備部の4部がある。審議会として水産政策審議会があり、地方支分部局（出先機関）として全国6か所に漁業調整事務所が置かれる。施設等機関として水産研究所（養殖研究所、水産工学研究所を含む）があったが、2001年（平成13）の中央省庁再編に伴い、独立行政法人水産総合研究センターが設置され、同センターが本部として全国の水産研究所を統轄、各水産研究所も独立行政法人となった。また、水産庁が所管していた独立行政法人には、ほかに水産大学校、さけ・ます資源管理センターがあったが、前者は2016年に水産総合研究センターと統合して水産研究・教育機構となり、後者は2006年に水産総合研究センターと総合して、さけますセンターとなり、2011年に水産総合研究センター北海道区水産研究所と統合。2016年には前者と同様、水産研究・教育機構の組織の一つとなった。
