A popular uprising that occurred in Paris in 1413 toward the end of the Hundred Years' War. It was so named because its core was a guild of meat traders, said to have numbered over 1,000 at the time, and was led by Simoné Le Coutrier, also known as Caboche, a cattle skinner at the Saint-Jacques slaughterhouse. At the time, the Lancastrian royal family of England was plotting to resume their invasion of France. The Valois royal family of France held the Three Estates General of Northern France to secure military funds. However, the meeting turned to debates on reforming the monarchy, which stimulated the people's desire for a commune. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
