Castanet - Castanet (English spelling) castanet English

A idiophone that produces sound by striking wooden boards tied together with a string. The original Spanish style consisted of two boards that were held in the hand and struck together with the fingers, but in orchestral music, a board with a handle and two smaller boards tied to either side of it are used, which produce sound when shaken. The striking surface has a depression to improve resonance. The origins of Spanish-style castanets date back to ancient Egypt, but the name comes from the Spanish word castaña, which means chestnut.

紐(ひも)で結ばれた木の板を打ち合わせて音を出す体鳴楽器。2枚の板からなり、手で包むように持って指で打ち合わせるスペイン式のものが本来の形であるが、管弦楽では、柄(え)のついた板の両側に小さな板を結び付け、振って音を出すものが用いられる。打面には響きをよくするためのくぼみがある。スペイン式カスタネットの起源は古代エジプトにまでさかのぼるが、名称は栗(くり)を意味するスペイン語のカスターニャcastañaに由来する。
