Part 1 - Kiitsu

...A Rinpa painter from the late Edo period. His given name was Motonaga, his pen name was Shibuchi, and he was commonly known as Tamezaburo. He was known by the pen names Teibakushi, Hisian, Kaikai, Seikai, and Shukurin. He became an apprentice of Sakai Hoitsu and studied painting. He married the sister of Suzuki Reitan, a vassal of the Sakai family and Hoitsu's attendant, and inherited the Suzuki family. He lived directly opposite Hoitsu's Uka-an and worked as a substitute for his teacher, but after his death, he established his own style of painting and gained fame. Based on the Hoitsu style, he opened up a new frontier with clear decorativeness backed by the aesthetic sense of the late Edo period. His representative works include "Summer and Autumn Mountain Stream Screen" (Nezu Museum), "White Camellias and Susukino Screen" (Fria Museum of Art), and "Group of Cranes Screen." ...

…江戸後期の琳派画家。名は元長，字は子淵，通称は為三郎。庭柏子，必庵，噲々，菁々，祝琳と号す。酒井抱一の内弟子となって絵を学ぶ。酒井家家臣で抱一の付人であった鈴木蠣潭（れいたん）の姉と結婚し，鈴木家を継ぐ。抱一の雨華庵の真向かいに住み，師の代作なども務めたが，その没後，独自の画風を確立して名声を高めた。抱一様式を基礎としつつ，幕末の美意識に裏打ちされた明晰な装飾性に新生面をひらいた。代表作に《夏秋渓流図屛風》(根津美術館)，《白椿･薄野図屛風》(フリア美術館)，《群鶴図屛風》などがある。…
