Pyotr Andreevich Vyazemskiy

Russian poet, critic, and prince. In the 1810s and 1820s, he was associated with Pushkin and future Decembrists, and was critical of the bureaucratic system, but later he became close to the imperial court, and served as the head of censorship from 1856 to 1858. After 1863, he spent most of his time abroad, and died in Germany. He first appeared on the poetic scene in 1808, and his early civic and satirical poems were close to the Decembrist poets. In the debate over new and old styles, he supported Karamzin, defended romanticism, and rejected pseudo-classicism. As the years went by, he became more conservative in both his political beliefs and literary views, but his style of poetry, which covered a wide range of genres, remained light and witty, and his memoirs, "Notebooks" (1883-86), are also of great historical value as a social and cultural journal of the first half of the 19th century.

ロシアの詩人、批評家、公爵。1810～20年代にプーシキンや後のデカブリストと交わり、官僚制度に批判的であったが、のちに宮廷に近づき、56～58年は検閲の責任者を務めた。63年以後はほとんど外国に暮らし、ドイツで死んだ。詩壇への登場は1808年からで、初期の市民詩、風刺詩ではデカブリスト詩人に近い。新旧文体論争ではカラムジンを支持、ロマンチシズムを擁護し、擬古典主義を排した。年とともに政治的信条、文学観ともに保守化したが、多岐のジャンルにわたる詩風は軽妙で変わらず、回想記『手帳』（1883～86）は19世紀前半の社会文化誌として史料的価値も高い。
