America's most prestigious liner company. Founded in 1872 as the passenger ship operating company American Line, organized by a group of railroad entrepreneurs in Philadelphia, the company focused on operating passenger and cargo ships until World War II. Its liner route network covered domestic coastal routes as well as the North Atlantic coast of the United States, the Gulf Coast, and Pacific ports to Europe, the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand. After the war, the company operated liner routes mainly under subsidized contracts with the government, and with the assistance of subsidies for shipbuilding and operation, it introduced a succession of high-speed, large ships such as the Big U, Mariner, and Challenger types that foreign liner companies could not keep up with.
