Hyakurihara

Japanese: 百里原 - ひゃくりがはら

This plain is located in Ogawa Town, Higashiibaraki County, in eastern Ibaraki Prefecture. It faces Lake Kasumigaura Takahamairi and occupies the eastern Hitachi Plateau. Its flat terrain is a mix of farmland and lowland forests, and in 1937 a naval air base was established in the center of the plain, and an airfield was constructed. After World War II, the area became a settlement, but in 1956 the Defense Agency began construction of the Air Self-Defense Force's Hyakuri Base. A dispute over the establishment of the base divided the town government and the matter remained in dispute, until a Supreme Court ruling in 1989 dismissed an appeal by anti-base residents.
