Yukifumi Kinoshita

A poet of the late Edo period. Born into a farming family in Nagao Village, Asakuchi County, Bitchu Province (Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture). Accompanied by Ono Rekio from the same village, he went to Kyoto and studied waka poetry under Chogetsu and Jien, but later became a disciple of Kagawa Kageki (Keien), and was known as the twin pillars of the Keien school alongside Kumagai Naoyoshi. Naoyoshi faithfully followed his teacher's teachings, but Kobun often opposed Kageki, and there was also a problem surrounding the publication of his essay "Sayasaya Soushi" (1820). He died on November 2, 1821, at the age of 43, at Sayasayanoya in Shiroko Town, Osaka. His family anthology "Ryoyo Iko" was published after his death, but his collection of "One Hundred Poems from Poverty" made his name immortal. His unpublished works include "Manyoshu Annotated Commentary" and "Kokinshu Guan."

江戸後期の歌人。備中(びっちゅう)国浅口郡長尾村（岡山県倉敷市）の農家に生まれる。同村の小野櫟翁(れきおう)に連れられて京都に上り、澄月(ちょうげつ)、慈延(じえん)に和歌を学んだが、のち香川景樹(かげき)（桂園(けいえん)）の門人となり、熊谷直好(くまがいなおよし)と並んで桂園派の双璧(そうへき)と称された。直好は忠実に師説を祖述したが、幸文は景樹に反発することが多く、随筆『亮々(さやさや)草紙』（1820）の刊行をめぐっても問題があった。文政(ぶんせい)4年11月2日に大坂白子町の亮々舎(さやさやのや)で43歳で没した。没後に家集『亮々遺稿』が刊行されたが、集中の「貧窮百首」は幸文の名を不朽のものとした。未刊の著書に『万葉集註釈(ちゅうしゃく)』『古今集愚案』などがある。
