…The river originates near Momoi Pass in Kyoto Prefecture, and its main stream flows almost in a straight line north along the Hanaori Fault between the Hira Mountains and the Tanba Highlands. It joins with tributaries such as the Harihata River, Kita River, and Aso River, turns east near the market in Kutsuki Village, and forms a wide delta before flowing into the west shore of Lake Biwa. The upper reaches of the river are called the Kuzu River Valley in the south and the Kutsuki Valley in the north. There are cliffs on both sides, and there is little arable land, so forestry is prominent.
